Rainbow Mountain Peru

The Colors of the Rainbow Mountain

Every time they tell you that something is impossible, remember a thousand times that in Cusco we have a rainbow mountain, yes, you did not read wrong, a mountain with 7 colors that can be seen among imposing snow-capped mountains and reveals its peculiar colors to the view of the world.

This beautiful geological formation that nature gives us, located between the districts of Cusipata, province of Quispicanchis and Pitumarca, province of Canchis surprises viewers by the way its colors rest on a mountain that, seems to be painted by hand with oil, on this precious natural canvas.

The colors of the rainbow mountain

Everything has an explanation. The pigmentation of this beautiful mountain of 7 colors is due to the composition of minerals such as red clay, sandstone, quartz, iron, and magnesium. This is not fortuitous, since thanks to its unique coloration, this attraction is the second most visited destination in Cusco, making it a direct competitor to the always beloved Machu Picchu.

Thousands of daring travelers come from all over the world to witness this incredible destination with their own eyes to climb the rainbow mountain and take the long-awaited selfie at the top, with the colors in the background. But how do we get there? Now we will tell you.

The walk to Vinicunca

We will get up early. Before signing the rooster, we will take a bus to Llacto, a place where we can prepare for our walk. I'm not lying to you, it won't be easy, but it will be worth it.

We will start walking a flat section, without many climbs, always accompanied by a beautiful landscape typical of a cold climate, yellow grasslands, clear skies, white clouds, and an icy wind that makes you reconnect with nature. Relax, we will walk and warm-up, do not forget your bottle of water!

We will continue like this for approximately 1 hour and a half, between small stalls of the villagers and little llamas that appear to keep us company, until the good thing arrives: the climb.

The last section: We already see the colors of the rainbow mountain!

Little by little, the colors appear between the clouds, the air feels a little colder than usual and we feel that it is time for the heavy walk, this last stretch to reach our goal, we will fulfill the long-awaited dream of seeing the mountain of 7 colors!

The road is getting steep. We can feel the adrenaline and the desire to reach the goal. We take a breath and continue walking until we reach a path that guides us to the top, we hold onto the ropes, as a way of support, and we move on.

The other passengers are seen in the distance, at the top, taking pictures, in our last impulse, we take the final steps and finally, we made it.

At the top of the 7 colors

Indeed, if it has 7 colors! We rest for a moment, we fix ourselves and smile with such satisfaction of having achieved our mission, to be able to have this wonder of nature in front of us, in all its splendor. Vinicunca gives us its best view, free of mist and with a radiant sun that will help us take the long-awaited cover.

Already up, the walk and all the physical and mental effort have been worth it. We have before us the rainbow mountain and next to one of the apus considered as a protector god of the city of Cusco, what more can we ask for?

We returned, with our hearts happy to have achieved it, after capturing the moment in the mind, the heart and the cell phone, we began the descent, to get to the bus and return, victorious because a mountain of 7 colors, you cannot see all the days.
